David reached out to us in the summer of 2022 with a clear goal: he wanted to buy a flat. Being an honest and hardworking guy, he had managed to save up the deposit on his own, and his expectations were realistic. We knew right away that we’d be able to help him.
By September 2022, he had a mortgage offer from the bank, and our solicitors started working on the purchase. However, as the months slowly passed, it became clear that there were significant issues with the property. For example, his would have been the only privately owned flat in the block, with all the others being council-owned. There were also problems with the roof, a short lease, high service charges, and more.
After a long back-and-forth, David decided to back out of the purchase in early December 2022, just days before he was supposed to get the keys. He said he’d try again in a few months. We were a bit skeptical, as many people in his situation give up on buying altogether after such an experience, and we had put in months of work.
But as I mentioned earlier, David is determined. True to his word, he reached out again in March 2023. We didn’t start the process then because he couldn’t find the right property, and the market was quite unstable.
Finally, in March 2024, David found the perfect place, made an offer, which was accepted, and within days, he had his mortgage offer. By early August 2024, he had the keys to his new home.
The lesson here is clear: just because a purchase doesn’t work out the first time or it takes months to find the right property, you shouldn’t give up.
